Course Description: This 2½ day CME accredited educational activity will focus on the needs of healthcare professionals practicing emergency medicine in rural areas. This activity will include didactic presentation and hands-on skill labs on numerous lifesaving procedures. Selected presentations will include orthopaedic injuries, pediatric and difficult airway, care of the geriatric patient, the poisoned patient, acute stroke, sedation, stabilization/transfer, pulmonary embolism, and psychiatric considerations.
Target Audience: Physicians, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practitioners
Course Objectives:
1. Discuss advanced, pediatric and difficult airway management.
2. Utilize hands on skills with surgical airways, rapid sequence intubation and pediatric airways.
3. Review current topics and skills in orthopaedic emergencies.
4. Discuss stabilization procedures, requirements and transfer protocol for critical patients.
5. Utilize hands on skills with IV access, emergency surgical procedures, FAST exam and intraosseous access.
6. Discuss common toxicology related issues currently seen by rural practitioners.
7. Discuss the special needs of the geriatric patient.
8. Discuss the current trends in identification and treatment of stroke.
9. Discuss psychiatric issues rural practitioners will see present to their Emergency Department.
